Oprah, Rielle Hunter and the bizarre twist of politics

Let me preface this post by saying I used to like Oprah. I liked that her shows weren't always about "who's your daddy" and "I slept with your sister!" I liked that she encouraged reading and altruism and seemed a strong voice for children. Now, I was never one of those Oprahtites who went out and bought the books she recommended or made my Christmas list based on her "favorite things" list.  But still, I liked her.  And I loved the fact that she was instrumental in launching the career of Paula Deen- kitchen goddess extraordinaire.

So with that in mind, I have to ask WTH was going through her head when she sat down to talk with Rielle Hunter yesterday?  If you were lucky enough to miss the show, I'll sum it up for you: Loony woman who slept with a married political candidate,  throws around buzz words like "authentic life" and "higher truth" while Oprah looks like she's smelling something really, really bad in the room but is trying to pretend she doesn't notice.

Now let me make another confession here.  I actually used to like Jon Edwards.  I would have voted for him.  I'm now really glad I never got that chance.  I fell for that good old southern boy charm.  I felt bad about the tragic loss of his and Elizabeth's son.  I admired (erroneously I know now) the way their shared history and tragedy of her recurring breast cancer seemed to strengthen their partnership.

So when the story about the alleged affair broke, like many others I didn't believe it.  I didn't believe he would so stupid to do something like that while actually running for president. Could he? When he went on television and denied everything, I wanted to believe him but I couldn't shake that nagging "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" feeling.

But I digress. This post isn't about him.  It's about her.  It's about someone who seems so out of touch with the reality of her role in the demise of a marriage, the hurt she caused another woman and her children, and her role in bringing down someone who could have been president. I won't bore you with the details of what she said you can read that HERE. What I will say is that she should have listened to the friends who told her not to do the interview.  Instead of coming across as sympathetic, she comes across as a narcissistic vampire who held on to a sex tape for future leverage (though she claims she thought she had destroyed it.)  Come on! The woman was a professional videographer, she of all people would know how to destroy video evidence. There is only one reason you hang on to things like tapes and blue dresses...and it isn't for the fond memories.

She portrays Elizabeth as a clueless shrew. Someone who led "Johnny" around by his nose. Well, what was SHE leading him by? A 40 something woman who purposely avoided using birth control.  And she's the victim of it all? She was helping him lead an "authentic" and "true" life, all while lying to not only his wife, but the American public as well.  The only 'truth' I heard out of the entire interview was in relation to the, now infamous, GQ pics.

Rielle: You know what I was thinking?

Oprah: Yes, what were you thinking?

Rielle: Here's what I was thinking.

Oprah: Because you actually have to take your pants off.

Rielle: Right. What I was thinking was, "I would like to have one sexy shot where the world can see me as a beautiful woman, as opposed to all those photos that are out there of me looking like some Wicked Witch of the West—the ugliest thing you could ever imagine." So there's definitely ego in that. Look where ego gets you
.

I've got to admit, she knew all of Oprah's buzz words by heart.  But it was obvious after watching this interview, that she has zero clue as to what any of them really mean. And Rielle, the pictures were a fail. You still come across as the ugliest thing someone could imagine.
